KICKSTARTING YOUR MUSIC CAREER.

If you really want a career in music, you don’t sit down, waiting for it to happen to you.  You get up and make it happen!
Maybe all you think about is “I want to blow” or “make it” but do you know what it takes to make it? Do you know how to reach that level of success you desire?
Let me let you know that for those who have attained success in this industry, be it as an artiste, producer, director or promoter, it did not happen overnight. And it wasn’t a bed of roses either.

WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT TERM & LONG TERM GOALS?
Focus on short term goals first. If you're an artiste who has never performed to a live audience or had your song played on the radio, maybe getting an opening slot at a local show and getting airplay within the next three months is your first objective. Whatever you need to do next requires a first step. Identify it, and start working on it. Having small goals and accomplishing them will feel a lot more productive, than trying to do everything all at once.
YOU NEED TO GET OUT THERE!
Music industry success has a whole lot to do with who you know, and the people who can help you aren't going to come over and knock on your door. Get out there in person and get to know some people who can open some doors for you. Don't be afraid to take chances and don't be afraid of getting turned down. There's nothing wrong with hearing "no" in the music business - in fact, you'd better get used to it. The bottom line is that if you don't ask, you don't get.

As an artiste, meeting people and talking about what you do is something that should be done on a daily basis. It continually baffles me when I hear some people complain that radio presenters don’t play their songs, nobody invites them for shows, bla bla bla. The truth is that, they’re too lazy or too proud to go out there and hustle like everyone else.  If you don’t network and build good relationships in the business, who will remember you?

Go out there! Whether you are invited or not, as an upcoming act, show up at event, hustle your way back stage, talk to the artistes performing, the MC anyone you think is in a position to help. Get numbers, BB pins, contact details, and build your own network. You need to make yourself a salesman and sell yourself.
