DO YOU REALLY NEED A MANAGER? PART 2

So we have established earlier, that finding a manager as an upcoming artiste is a herculean task. Let me also add that any artiste who has worked hard to establish his/her career and achieved a level of success,  will have a better chance to 'attract' the services of a professional, well-connected and respected manager, Because Managers who do this job for a living can only take on artistes that generate income.
Having said this, let’s go straight into self management. As a new act breaking into the industry, here are some tips on how to manage yourself until you create enough buzz to attract a manager. I dare say by the time you’ve done all these, the industry experience you will have gained will be timeless!

TIPS ON MANAGING YOURSELF
1.       Know what you value most from making your music, and honour your values
2.       Prepare an overview, or draft of a career plan that address your goals
3.       Stay informed: read books and articles on the business of music regularly
4.       Go out and make relevant industry contacts, and keep in touch with them.
5.       Practice your communication skills in person, as well as on the phone
6.       Create a Webpage, and promote it aggressively.
7.       Remember that you are not alone as a musician, find unique networking opportunities
8.       Nurture your relationship with fans, and communicate with them regularly
9.       Get close to lawyers, promoters and publicists with music business backgrounds
10.   Get close to media people. Radio presenters, TV hosts, newspaper and magazine writers, bloggers etc
11.   Don’t be too proud to ask questions when you get confused
12.   Learn how to write formal letters, Bios, press releases and articles
13.   Keep abreast of happenings in the industry. Always make it your business to know what’s going on. Chase events and hustle your way in if you must.
14.   Above all, read, read, and research! Knowledge is power.

Thank you Ma for your ceaseless effort and help towards us, the upcoming and aspirings acts. God bless you.

But please Ma, I want to know this: "If I do a song on the beat of an already known song of a super star (international or local) and it comes out good, can it be played by Radio stations, DJs at coporate events and can a video be shot for it". Help me please, I really want to know before going on to do it.

Thanks and God bless.

@ Anthony as long as the music is not sold, it can be played on your local radio stations but you must acknowledge the owner. as for shooting a video, you need to seek permission from the owner of the copyright.
